Launching Add-on Datapacks

Virtual Racing School is expanding its coverage of iRacing’s official series – now offering the Short Track Add-on and the NASCAR Legends Series Add-on as a new step to meeting our customer’s requests for more datapacks.

Short Track Add-onOften, datapacks are requested for series that are either not very popular, or were not used very much on VRS in the past. Datapacks take significant time investment to prepare, so we have to make hard decisions on which iRacing series to cover. Beginning in Season 3, we’re testing the “add-on” concept to be able to offer additional datapacks. We’re trying two different ways of going about this: a bundled add-on of 6 iRacing series, and an individual add-on for the NASCAR Legends Series. Two of our best coaches and eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series drivers, Bobby Zalenski and Keegan Leahy, will be preparing these datapacks.

The Short Track add-on includes datapacks for both Super Late Model series, the Tour Modifieds, SK modifieds, the Late Model Tour, and Advanced Legends for $4.99. The individual series add-on for the NASCAR Legends Series is available for $1.99. We offer free access to the add-ons through July 9th, 2020. After that date a Dedicated or Competitive subscription will be required to enable the Add-ons and you will be able do so in your account billing page.

With the ultimate goal of covering all iRacing series in the future with VRS datapacks, it’s important we listen to customer feedback and get your thoughts on the add-on concept for series that VRS doesn’t currently cover. Please let us know your thoughts here.

VRS DirectForce Pro Wheel Base – Now Shipping in the EU

The VRS DirectForce Pro Wheel Base started shipping out of our EU warehouse this week and the first units are arriving in customers’ hands on Tuesday! If you haven’t reserved yet, you can do so here.

Over the coming days and weeks we’ll be sending email invitations to EU reservation holders to place their orders. The invitations expire after 48 hours and if an order is not placed, the reservation will be put on hold. Then the next reservation holders in the queue will be invited to place an order. If you miss your order window, resume your reservation and you’ll be added back to the queue at your original spot and will receive a new invitation when more units are available. You can manage your reservation here.

We have a limited number of units available at the moment but more will be available in the next 2-4 weeks (before end of May). Then a bigger batch should become available in June. We aim to start shipping to the US from our US warehouse in late May or in July. We aim to fully ramp up production and eliminate the need for reservations by July/August.

VRS DirectForce Pro Wheel Base – Shipping Update

Despite the turbulent times we live in at the moment, we have been able to make progress with the VRS DirectForce Pro Wheel Base production and we think we are just a couple of weeks away from opening sales.

VRS DirectForce Pro Wheel Base shipping update
The motors, hub adapters and mounting brackets were manufactured all the way back in January, as originally planned, but some of our shipments got delayed. We have had all three of these components in our US warehouse for a month now and we should finally receive them at our EU warehouse next week.

The final piece of the puzzle is the motor controllers. We experienced several delays but we expect to have the first batch ready at our German factory by the end of next week. As soon as this makes it to our EU warehouse, we’ll start inviting people with EU reservations to place their orders. Barring any other unforeseen delays, the first units will ship around mid-April.

We expect the next batch of controllers, going to both our US and EU warehouses, to be ready before the end of April and then another bigger batch before the end of May. The total production through the end of May is enough to meet all current reservations plus another 60% more reservations on top of that. So people who already placed reservations, or who would place reservations soon, are very likely to get their system by May or June.

We intentionally have not done much in terms of promotion as we didn’t want to have too big a backlog of reservations at launch. But once we start shipping, we expect word of mouth to start traveling fast. In anticipation of growing demand, we are already preparing to scale up our production by July / August. At that time we hope to remove reservations for the VRS DirectForce Pro Wheel Base and to maintain sufficient stock levels at both our warehouses.

Many of you ask us about a timeline for the VRS DirectForce Pro Pedals release. We are getting very close to finalizing the design. Once we freeze the design, we’ll immediately start setting up production. We think we’d be able to launch the pedals this summer.

1:1 Coaching Update

For the last four years since our launch in early 2016, we have strived to provide the best value coaching service in sim racing here on VRS, with a vast selection of world champion level drivers available for 1:1, tailored sessions. Not only have we been unmatched anywhere on price, we’ve also given our customers the opportunity to learn from the best.

As the sim racing world continues to go from strength to strength, demand for these services continues to increase. With our core subscription service to data packs, our online driving analyser and tutorials, we are able to meet this growth without issue, and our coaches will continue to work hard to provide the best reference laps, instructional videos and setups possible long into the future.

Many of you will have been following the development of our DirectForce Pro wheel base and pedals, of which we hope to be shipping the first wheel base units to customers in the coming weeks, while we continue to work hard to release our pedals later this year.

With regards to individual coaching, we need to make some changes now in order to be able to continue to provide 1:1 coaching with the world’s best sim racers for years to come. Effective today (March 28th, 2020), we are making the following changes:

  • The hourly base rate for all coaching will change to 99 EUR/USD.
  • Individual coaches will be able to set their own price.
  • We will honor all coaching coupons / gift cards issued at the old rate.
  • For a limited period, any existing students who have had coaching previously will be able to book additional sessions at the old rate (contact your coach for scheduling).
  • Also for a limited period, new students can book coaching at the old rate if they agree to the session being live streamed to the public on twitch and other platforms.
  • Sessions at the new rate will optionally be video recorded and a private copy be available to the student for later reference.
  • Similarly, coach driving data from a joint practice session will be made available to the student for later reference.
  • These same sessions will also be accompanied with a short written summary with some things for the student to focus on afterwards.
  • Finally, we will simplify the coaching session options to make booking your first sessions simpler and easier than before.

As always, do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or need help getting started with 1:1 coaching.

VRS DirectForce Pro Wheel Base – Pricing Update

The VRS DirectForce Pro Wheel Base will retail in the US for $799 and in the EU for €899 (VAT incl.). We expect to start shipping in early 2020. Reservations are now open HERE.

VRS DirectForce Pro is our high-end, competitively-priced sim racing hardware product line. After receiving strongly positive feedback at the SimRacing Expo earlier this year (driver quotes here), we are excited to bring the VRS DirectForce Pro Wheel Base to market early 2020.

VRS DirectForce Pro Wheel BaseThe VRS DirectForce Pro Wheel Base consists of:

  • VRS DirectForce Pro controller, which is a custom designed all-in-one FFB USB and motor controller, in a compact 5x16x18cm enclosure, using a 400W Mean Well PSU.
  • The popular 20Nm MiGE motor with 22-bit BISS-C encoder and customized for the VRS DirectForce Pro controller.
  • 3 meter motor power and encoder cables with double shielding and quality metal connectors.
  • 2 meter long double-shielded USB cable.
  • AC power cord for the respective region.

Optional accessories:

  • Motor shaft hub adapter for a steering wheel with standard 70mm PCD bolt pattern. The hub adapter has 6x M5 threaded holes that allow you to directly screw a steering wheel onto hub adapter. Not needed if your steering wheel comes with its own quick-release hub, or if your steering wheel is screwed in from the back and requires through-hole mounting holes on the hub adapter.
  • Motor mounting bracket for mounting on desks or rigs that only support bottom mounting. Not needed if your rig comes with a front motor mounting bracket with mount holes for the MiGE motor.
  • (To be released later) Remote stop box with a torque off switch and power on/off switch.

A VRS wheel rim with button plate with paddle shifters will be released at a later date. In the meantime, the VRS DirectForce Pro Wheel Base is compatible with any OSW style steering wheel and button plate. Some third parties even offer conversion kits for popular mid-end wheels. You need a sturdy rig that can withstand the forces produced by the MiGE motor.

We will initially be only serving the US and EU markets with a warehouse in each of the two markets. Once we scale our production, we’ll start selling to customers outside of the US and the EU. We are now accepting no-deposit reservations. The reservations will help us monitor demand in different markets and will help us ensure we have appropriate levels of stock in our US and EU warehouses. With a reservation you’d be able to monitor your estimated shipping date. And when your turn is up, you’ll be able to convert your reservation to an order. You can place a reservation here (free VRS account required).

Pricing for those shipping to the US:

  • VRS Direct Force Pro Wheel Base – $799
  • Motor hub adapter – $49
  • Motor mounting bracket – $49

Pricing for those shipping to the EU:

  • VRS Direct Force Pro Wheel Base – €899 (VAT incl.)
  • Motor hub adapter – €49 (VAT incl.)
  • Motor mounting bracket – €49 (VAT incl.)

We will announce pricing and availability for other markets like Canada and Australia at a later date. We would ship to the US and to the EU from warehouses within those markets, so we expect the shipping costs to be quite reasonable. We’ll announce the shipping costs by the time we start converting reservations to orders.

VRS DirectForce Pro Wheel Base – Certification Update

VRS DirectForce Pro Wheel Base The VRS DirectForce Pro Wheel Base passed all certification tests and we are setting up the first production batch!

Since the announcement we made back in January 2019, we did multiple iterations on our hardware. We improved the robustness of the system, as well as made sure the final product meets all required EMC and safety standards for North America, Europe and Australia. Over the past month we successfully went through EMC testing and electrical safety testing for the VRS DirectForce Pro Wheel Base. This enables us to proceed with setting up our manufacturing for the official product launch!

It will take a few more weeks until all of our production orders are confirmed. Once we have the final costs, as well as the estimated delivery dates to our warehouse(s), we will announce a release date and final consumer pricing. We’re still on target for a price under US$1000 and product release in early 2020.

We’ve seen some strong interest on our hardware mailing list. In order to better manage supply and demand, and to offer better customer support as we roll out, we’ll likely introduce some sort of a reservation system. This would allow people to get a spot in the queue before we officially start selling the product.

We’ll post another update as soon as more details are confirmed. To get the latest news on VRS DirectForce Pro, follow our Facebook page, or register to our hardware mailing list here.

VRS DirectForce Pro at SimRacing Expo 2019

VRS DirectForce Pro rig at SimRacing Expo 2019

We had a great time at the SimRacing Expo 2019! For the first time we had a booth and brought two proper sim racing rigs featuring the upcoming VRS DirectForce Pro hardware – the wheel base and our brand new pedal prototypes. A lot of VRS members stopped by to say hi and try the hardware, as well as groups of drivers from multiple WCS teams. The feedback universally is extremely positive (some quotes below). People who’d never experienced proper high end hardware were completely blown away. And people who own or have tried the proper hardware found the VRS products to be as good or better than the best on the market. That’s what we aimed for, so it was very reassuring and rewarding to hear that feedback.

The most frequently asked questions were when we’ll release the hardware and how much the wheel base and pedals would cost. We don’t want to announce narrow pricing and release dates until we are very close to having product ready to ship. We can reiterate that we are aiming to bring top quality products to market at very competitive pricing. The wheel base is making good progress towards production but the last 1% tends to take the longest. We’re just diligently working through the little details, so we can deliver an awesome product, which was worth the wait. For those of you who didn’t have a chance to visit us at the expo and want to learn more about the pedals, we plan to publish a blog post with more info in the coming weeks. To get latest news on VRS DirectForce Pro, follow our Facebook page, or register to our hardware mailing list here.

Last but not least, here are quotes from some of the drivers who stopped by our booth and tried the hardware:

Alex Simpson (Team Owner, Apex Racing Team): “I tried the VRS pedals and steering system at the 2019 SimRacing Expo. I have only a couple of points to make, 1. it was nice to test a rig that had been setup correct. FOV, FFB, Seating Position were spot on. 2. I couldn’t tell the difference between my SimSteering 2 and HE Ultimate Pedals compared to the new VRS DD Steering System and Pedals. Great work from the team in producing this kit. More competition in this hardware area is good news for us sim racers. I hope to try them on my own setup sometime soon.”

Deni Raets (Driver, Radicals Online): “Comparing it to my own OSW the VRS wheel feels really smooth with very detailed feedback, which makes the car easy to point in the correct direction. If the price is good as they are trying to aim it for I would consider selling my OSW for VRS. Also nice detail the controller box is very tiny which makes it easy to mount on your rig without it taking much space. The pedals offer a lot of adjustability and good precision for braking. They also look very rigid and well built which will make them last very long.”

Jarl Teien (Driver, ineX Racing): “I was pretty impressed honestly, instantly confident and ready to explore the limits of the car. I didn’t know iRacing could feel that good.”

Michele Costantini (Driver, Apex Racing Team): “I really enjoyed driving the VRS hardware during the 2019 SimRacing Expo, especially the direct drive wheel. I felt each bump and curb I was hitting, I knew exactly where I was placing my car and how much I could push it with just a couple of laps experience on what was a totally new hardware level compared to what I’m used to drive on at home. In terms of the pedals, I only had the chance and the time to test the soft spring setting, but I could easily manage it from the very first few braking zones and I could be very precise with it. The VRS rig was without any doubts the best one I tried at the SimRacing Expo this year in terms of both hardware and software settings.”

Michele Ricci (Driver, Apex Racing Team): “The wheel provides a very wide range of feedback: you can really feel all the bumps and curbs on the track at all times. The feel the car gives you is also great, it’s always possible to predict what the car is doing in terms of oversteer or understeer.”

Paschalis Gkergkis (Driver, Coanda Simsport): “The VRS DirectForce Pro wheel as well as the prototype pedals that were presented at the SimRacing Expo are a must have for any casual or hardcore simracer looking for immersion and precision.”

Rob Cuss (Team Owner, Radicals Online): “I found the wheel extremely well detailed with great feel. I have used many different wheels but this is hands down one of the best in the wheels I have ever tried, astonishing! The feedback is tremendous and the smoothness is out of this world.”

Sage Karam (real-life IndyCar Series driver): “For me it was my first opportunity to drive any type of direct drive system. I drove multiple different systems and to me the VRS was the smoothest and most consistent out of any of the ones I drove. I could really feel the car better such as a slide and because the response was so great it was super easy to drive what would be a difficult car to drive on most other steering systems. The pedals were also great. I was really impressed with how the brake pedal in particular performed. It was a very lifelike feeling for me coming from IndyCar racing. I was able to set it up super stiff and felt really natural to me. The spring system is really nice as it makes the pedals very smooth from 0% to 100% there’s no notches in any of the travel which made pedal modulation a breeze. Ultimately all these things enabled me to be more consistent and also faster to unlock another level of overall performance to my sim racing.”

Simone Maria Marcenò (Driver, Altus Esports): “I use a non direct drive wheel and once I tested the VRS wheel it was immediately the best feeling I ever felt in terms of force feedback. In just few laps I was fast and consistent like after doing a hundred lap race preparation. I usually must do a lot of laps with my wheel in order to be competitive, but immediately felt I can obtain the same race preparation level in few laps with the VRS wheel.”

VRS DirectForce Pro Announcement

VRS Hardware Announcement

VRS DirectForce Pro is a direct drive wheel controller box optimized for the popular 20Nm Small MiGE motor. Our goal is to deliver a top quality controller that enables Small MiGE wheel bases to be built for under US$1000.

The top direct drive wheels currently on the market have already set a high quality bar. But this quality comes at a cost. You need to be prepared to spend anywhere from US$1000 to over US$4000 on just the direct drive wheel base (controller, motor and accessories). You’d need to separately acquire a quality steering wheel rim with a button plate and shifter paddles, which would likely to set you back close to US$1000, if not more.

We have designed our own state of the art all-in-one USB FFB + motor controller board and bundled it with a 400W fanless PSU and a brake resistor into a compact enclosure. VRS DirectForce Pro is optimized for the market-proven Small MiGE servo motor (130ST-M10010), which can be driven up to 20Nm. With a later release of VRS DirectForce Pro XL we plan to support the Big MiGE (130ST-M10015). We also plan to explore adding support for smaller (and cheaper) MiGE motors, as well as plan to evaluate motors by other manufacturers.

Several of our VRS coaches have been using VRS DirectForce Pro for months now. The coaches who already had a quality direct drive system report that the VRS controller is as good or better than the competition. The coaches who made the transition from the low-end or mid-end hardware to the VRS wheel base are blown away by the experience. We are currently building more pre-production samples to put in the hands of more of our VRS coaches, as well as external testers. Stay tuned to our FB page for announcement(s) on how some of you could get a chance to experience VRS DirectForce Pro prior to the official release date.

VRS Sim Racing Hardware Announcement

VRS Hardware Announcement

We’re excited to kick the year off with the announcement of our sim racing hardware initiative.

Sim racing gear is a favorite topic among sim racers because the hardware can have a massive impact on the driving experience. The transition from the low/mid end hardware to the high end hardware brings a huge step up in immersion. In a very real sense, it feels like you are no longer “gaming” but actually driving a proper race car! The downside is that this step up in immersion comes with a significant step up in cost, limiting the experience to only sim racers with very deep pockets.

Looking at the product offerings in the mid and high ends of the price range, it was clear that sim racers are being overcharged for what they get. The mid end products ought to have better quality and reliability at their price point. The high end products deliver quality and reliability but at outlandish price. We thought we could do better – deliver the high end experience at much more affordable price points – so we got to work!

In 2019 we plan to come out with a number of standalone components, eventually offering a complete set of sim racing gear. We are not ready to announce specific timelines yet, but we’ll say that our direct drive wheel controller is nearing series production. We’ve had several of our VRS coaches use the development prototypes for a few months now. They’ve been happily doing their VRS datapacks and official racing on the VRS controller and giving us feedback to perfect the product. And it’s coming together great! We plan to release more information about our direct drive wheel controller soon.
